In the 17th century, small cabinets such as this were often crafted for apothecaries, scholars, or monastic settings, used to store herbs, pigments, coins, or other precious objects requiring careful organization. The paneled doors, protective hardware, and nine orderly drawers reflect a world where utility was elevated through craftsmanship, each piece built to endure and safeguard its contents. Its rich patina and timeworn surfaces now bear witness to more than three centuries of use, making it not only a rare survivor but also a striking testament to early Italian craftsmanship. If you look closely, you'll notice one of these drawers is a hiding spot.
